In a few hours, the largest sporting event in the world will begin in South Africa. Its Wold Cup Soccer time! Its starts tomorrow at 8am eastern and 5am pacific time. With some many more kids in the U.S. playing soccer now, its no wonder ABC and ESPN are now airing all the games. The first one starts tomorrow, Friday June 1oth just after the opening ceremonies, Mexico vs. South Africa! It should be a spectacular event! I’ll be up and early watching it on ESPN.

Then on Saturday on ABC its USA vs England. To see a full schedule of games and times, visit the ESPN World Cup website.

Any soccer fans out there? I know this site gets visits from around the world, so I assume there are many of you out there. According to FIFA, the World Cup Organization, is expecting sever hundred million people to view the opening ceremonies! If I’m not mistaken, I believe the World Cup gets much more viewers than the Summer Olympics and of course any single U.S. Sporting event, even the Super Bowl won’t get as many viewers.

But its understandable, since it is a world wide event. In the last World Cup of 2006, the singer Shakira performed in the opening ceremonies, and she will be doing it again. The Vice President of the U.S. will also be in attendance, along with many other world leaders.

It will be an exciting month of soccer games. I know Christi will be enjoying it! Oh yeah, and on a different sporting event here in the U.S., Go Lakers!

To get everyone hyped up for the games…

2010 World Cup South Africa, an opportunity photographers should not miss!

Every 4 yrs the world comes together for a an event that only the Summer Olympics can compare too…the FIFA World Cup, and this year its in South Africa. Here in the U.S., Soccer or “Football” as its known worldwide, is not the most popular or widely attended sport. But leave the U.S., and soccer is not only the most popular played sport, but also the most watched!

Don’t believe me? In 2006, the World Cup was played in Germany with over 32 billion viewers! That’s right, billions with a “B”! Read the ratings recap by FIFA here. Over 207 countries watched that event and this summer, the world will be watching again, and perhaps getting higher numbers.

Over the last 15-20 yrs or so, with the addition of the MLS and the U.S. Women’s Soccer team winning the 1999 World Cup match during a memorable gave over China, the popularity of soccer has increased. Its taken a new role in local schools and colleges. Kids in the U.S. are now playing soccer on a regular basis and perhaps one day it will reach the same status as the rest of the world.

So what does this have to do with photography? Everything! Imagine a photographer taking part in the most watched and popular sporting event in the world! I can image photographers, whether they are attending the event or not, are taking stock photography involving soccer or tailoring some pictures they create to this event. After all, who wouldn’t want to have the opportunity for only a fraction of the 32 billion viewers to see your work? In a commercial, a billboard or a magazine? Like anything else, viewers equals money to any business person and most professional photographers are in it for business. So if you are a pro or semi-pro photographer, you might want to start creating some images targeting the viewers of this large and profitable event!

As of today January 10, 2010, there are exactly 150 days left to the start of the World Cup in South Africa. You still have enough time to work on creating images for this event. I always think ahead and started a while back. The image included with this post is a photo I took using a college female soccer player, that’s right I went for originality! :-)

Model gone fishing…

I don’t know if its the weather right now or perhaps just the holiday season, but I think my models have all gone fishing! Its slow right now. Here is a picture from a set I took for the holidays, I took a model out to a lake and told her to get busy! It was pretty cold that day, so she wasn’t a happy camper! I had her in red boyshorts very small and thin fabric, and a small red top. I finally gave her the jacket because I could tell from her top she was cold! ;)

If she were on my team I’m sure I would lose each game…I’d be too busy looking at her and not the ball! Here is a blond I shot a time ago at a local park. She was fit as you can see and eager to play football! I managed to put down the camera and play with her a few minutes!
