Another free place to shoot, the park!

Sitting on the park benchThere is a little private, well kept park near where I live and its the perfect place to photograph models. The landscape is beautiful and the grounds overall are kept in pristine condition. During the week you can shoot there and have the entire park to yourself, its perfect for any photographer! I’ve shared pictures of this place in past posts here.

I photographed this lovely lady at this park and used a simple park bench as my main setting. A feisty and very intelligent woman, she was so energetic that the couple of hours we shot felt like only like a few minutes.park bench

Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, when I took a different model to this location I noticed the park had placed signs around the entrances stating that no “professional” photography would be allowed without a permit. In fact a security guard came to us after our shoot and told me that in the future they may not allow me to shoot there “because of the type of camera” I had. I never take any reflectors, external lights or anything, but I guess its all up to the park rangers to determine if its “professional” or not. No worries, I can shoot with my Canon PowerShot G11 10MP and get similar results! :-)

Taking pictures of windmills with a bonus!

Girl gets in my way as I take a picture of a windmill!

A funny thing happened to me today. I woke up today planning to run a few errands, meet a friend for lunch, then before heading home, stop by a local historical park to take some pictures of a windmill. Weekdays are normally empty at that park so I wanted to photograph it without people in the way. After going to the post office and being very surprised that they don’t sell stamps on vending machines anymore, go figure! I finished up my errands, had a pleasant lunch then headed to the park.

This location is well kept and is opened only during the day for visitors. A few people were walking around, but nothing like on a weekend. Tucked away next to some office buildings, this park is not widely visited on the weekdays and with clear skies, I knew it would be a good day. As usuall I walked around the structure photographing it from various angles and distances.

During this time I noticed two girls walking around the structure on the opposite side. I didn’t pay much attention to them as I was focused on shooting the windmill, but I think they noticed me! Finally after 20 minutes, I was a distance away and found an angle I liked, with the exception of a bush that blocked the lower left side of the windmill. The area was surrounded with shrubs so it was almost impossible to get a full photo of the structure without getting the bushes in the way. As I was ready to shoot I noticed the two girls walk near the windmill, so I paused and waited until they would pass, but to my surprise one of the girls stopped and stood right in front of the windmill as if she were posing!

I looked behind me to see if someone she knew was photographing her, but I was alone. Puzzled, I looked at her and with a loud voice she said “go ahead, take a picture!”, so I did, in fact I took about 2 or 3 of them. I think she was just having some fun. I walked over to her and she said they noticed I was photographing the windmill that she thought maybe I wanted a “pretty girl” in the picture! We had a nice conversation about photographing and modeling of course. She let me take a couple of close up pictures, but then they had to leave. It was a pleasant surprise!

Not sure if I will ever meet them again, but next time someone asks me how I meet some of the girls I photograph, I’ll tell them at the park! ;-)

Reliable model retires, best of luck!

Shooting a model at the bridge

Shooting a model at the bridge

I received some sad news today, seems a model I photographed earlier in the year has retired from modeling. I did a test shoot outdoors with her then later a studio shoot. She was a joy to work with! Seems she will be focusing on college and other goals in life. I wish her best of luck.

You can see more of her from my last post in March HERE.

If you ever have the privilege of photographing models/woman, you will find a wide range of talent. From those who are difficult to work with to those that simply make your day. This model was a pleasure to photograph. New, but very professional. She was always up for all types of ideas. In this photo, she tore up her jeans…in some very risky places! But when a model goes that extra step to make the image pop, then you know you found a good one!

Image was taken outdoors, on a bridge over a dry creek. I was on the floor shooting up with with a somewhat wide angle, don’t recall what mm it was. Nikon DSLR and Nikon SB strobe.

Today the skies were a little gloomy and the sun would peek out every once in a while but overall I thought it would be a good day to take a walk at the local park with a friend. She’s not a model and would never model for me, but she does have a nice pair of legs so she was up to taking some casual photos as long as I didn’t show her face. Which was perfect because I really wanted to capture her legs under natural light or at least outdoors with little flash. This photo was taken as she lay back on a picnic bench. Not the best photo but for a short 45 minute walk and a few photos, I think I did well on my day off!

Strange poses, what the heck, I'll photograph you!

Strange poses

Today I was looking at some older photos, and came across this image I took of Amy. She was a fun and crazy girl and during this shoot she leaned back on a park picnic bench, I thought it was a strange pose and she agreed…I took the photo anyways. Looking at the image now, it looks a little sexy of sorts. Because the top of the pants rode very low on her hip you can see the start of her “mound” on the far left and her tush pushed against the table. Strange pose? Maybe, but why not!

So next time you are unsure if the image/pose is right, take your Nikon or canon and shoot away!
