 Kymberly Jane in red lingerie
I’ve been busy this week doing some home remodeling. Yesterday I was moving a red velvet chair and it reminded me of Kymberly Jane when I photographed her in a similar red velvet couch. I know many of you have asked to see more of her, so here she is.
Kymberly Jane is non-stop action. She is constantly talking, posing and coming up with new ideas. Kymberly is not shy at all. In fact, when we first met, she arrived at the studio with a small suitcase full of outfits, put it aside, shook my hand and her first words were, “mind if I get naked, I feel more comfortable being in the nude”. She then proceeded to get undressed right in front of me!
Although, this is not how it normally works with any other model I have worked with, professional or amateur, I went with the flow and let her do it in her unique style…of course I mean the posing and modeling! Kymberly can be very edgy and sexual in her poses, but its that attitude that enables me to capture some great images of her.

 Kymberly Jane
Hope everyone is having a great weekend. In my area, the temperature is 80 degrees with clear skies! But I’m taking a little time off to make an addition to this site. Over the past few months I’ve noticed many international visitors coming to this site, and I appreciate it!
This site is written in English, but I know that sometimes the articles about photography or modeling are better understood if they are read in the native language of our visitors. So today I added a translation option to the site. If you notice on the upper right hand side of the page, there are a series of flags representing various different languages. If you want to change the language to meet your needs, simply find your flag and let the system translate the page!
Oh, yeah and Kymberly says “hi”! I’m heading out right now to shoot at the beach, wish me luck!

 Modeling on the couch.
Like some of you, I subscribe to several photography magazines. I enjoy the articles and sometimes learn a thing or two. Today I received one in the mail that has been around for many years with the tag line “How to make great pictures“. Although I enjoy the articles of this and other magazines, I often find it funny how the majority of the articles deal with photography equipment.
They list the best lenses, camera’s, lighting equipment, they even include great photography locations, but they often miss one important point when photographing models, how important a model personality is to creating a great image. You can have the latest Nikon or Canon camera, with the hottest new lens and best lighting kit and the knowledge to use it all, but if you don’t have the experience to choose and bring out the best of a model, its all for nothing!
What do I look for in a potential model? New or established model? There are several characteristics that stand out.
- Positive personality – often overlooked, but a happy and fun person will always bring out the best in a photo shoot. I won’t go into detail since I talked about this a few days ago. You can read that post here.
- Responsibility – very important, the last thing you want is someone who will not show up or cancel the day of the photo shoot. After spending money on a studio or location fees, having a model cancel or not show up can cost you hundreds of dollars! Even if its a test shoot outdoors where you are not spending actual money, my time is money. The time I spent planning and setting aside 2-3 hours equals to money lost. So whenever I decide to photograph someone I try to make sure they are responsible and let them know how much the shoot is going to cost me. It doesn’t always work, but it does reduce the number of models that flake on a shoot.
- Motivation – I find that most people who are motivated tend push themselves a little harder than others. A motivated model tries and works harder. Modeling is not always fun and games, it really is work and unless the model is motivated she can lose concentration and “finish” the day before you even get started!
- “It Factor” – the person’s personality or look must have something that stands out. This is the characteristic that is most difficult to find. There are many beautiful women, but not all are suited to be models. Like the example picture with Kymberly Jane shows, it takes a unique person to pull off poses like the way she manages to do.
So the next time you say to yourself “how do I take better pictures” think beyond camera equipment. Photo equipment is important and I often talk about it and will continue to do so, but we need to give equal importance to the quality of the person we are photographing.

 Kymberly Jane signature pose
Kymberly Jane is a popular local model and from some of the comments in the past, I can tell she is well received here on my blog. When I photographed Kymberly earlier this year, I used two digital cameras, a Nikon DSLR and a Canon G10. The few samples I have shared have been from both. Earlier this month I received an email via flickr about the ability to use the Canon G10 with studio lights and if it were possible.
The answer is yes. The images of Kymberly below are ones I took exclusively with the Canon Powershot G10. I overexposed them a little, but you really do have full control of the camera, as you would a regular DSLR. The G10 allows you to have full manual control and can be easily used with a Pocket Wizard to trigger your studio lights. In fact, I found I could trigger the lights without the Pocket Wizard attached, the camera has a wireless function that can detect a nearby receiver and trigger it. But I didn’t use that feature much, so I cant give much details about it. You can check your manual or test it without the Pocket Wizard.
I recently checked the current prices for a Canon Powershot G10 and was happy to see that the price dropped! Because of the fast pace advancement of digital camera updates, this is a great time to get digital cameras at a low price. Just a few months ago, the Canon Powershot G10 was going for $450 at Samys.com now on they have it listed for $399!
Below are a couple photos of Kymberly Jane taken with a Canon Powershot G10.

 Kymberly Jane
All day I’ve been packing for a week long trip. I hate to pack, its such a pain, but vacations are nice! Kymberly Jane emailed me the other day asking when we were going to shoot again. Let me tell you, she is so funny, even with her emails. If she wasn’t a model, I suggested she become a stand up comic!
Anyways, I’ll be going to a fun place for a week or so, but I’ll be taking my laptop and doing updates. But more importantly I’ll be taking my camera (as I always do)! I’m also helping a friend with his website, more of a travel photo website. I’ll post the link later, I created it for him, so it looks kind of similar.
But traveling with photo equipment is a pain at least for me it is, maybe I haven’t done it enough times. Or I need a different case/bag for it! I’m traveling light this time, taking a compact camera and maybe a DSLR. A few hours to go and still haven’t decided! The off-camera flash and most accessories will probably stay at home. I have a Pelican case but that too is staying at home. I’m taking a simple backpack and packing it all in, meaning my laptop and cameras! Hope nothing breaks or gets lost.
