A few days ago I received an email from a reader asking if I edited all of my pictures. The simple answer is yes. Every person has their own opinion about editing pictures, but every photographer I know does some type of editing on his/her pictures. For me, I would say I do some light editing about 90% of the time.
By “light editing”, I’m referring to cropping, resizing for web use, removing small specs on photo. So you can see how I do this to 90% of my pics, especially if I share them online. For regular family pictures I fix at most 10% of them. Personally I use Photoshop, but there are many other programs out there ranging from several hundred dollars, down to under $50 or even free!
Doing some simple edits to your pictures can enhance them tremendously. For example, look at the picture of Jannette on the top left. This was the final edit, the original can be found here. The original was fine the way it was, but Jannette had this glare that was hypnotic. When I shot the image, I noticed how she was looking past me, so I centered her to the left leaving an empty space to the right. On Photoshop, I added a lens flare to darken the corners, especially on the right empty side. This added to the tone of her “mysterious glare”.
I also removed a few small specs and lightened up the center of the wall a bit, but only a small amount. Overall it took me about 5 minutes to edit the picture. Some may feel the photo didn’t need any “fixing” but feel these small changes enhanced the image. What do you think?
We’ll I’m off for now. The family and I are heading over to get some free ice cream, yikes, I only have a few more hours, oh no wait its actually tomorrow, good. I’ll be on flickr, twitter and facebook later tonight.
