New Nikon cameras rumored to be announced in September

on the benchFor several months I’ve been waiting for Nikon to announce and release their new DSLR cameras. This year I must admit, Canon is ahead of the game and it almost seems strange that Nikon hasn’t released a new replacement for the D700, with more MP’s and HD video comparable to Canon. Not that I was in the market for a new Nikon D700s or whatever they plan on calling it, but I always expect Nikon and Canon to match each other.

The only rumored announced by Nikon next month is the D90 and D3000 replacements, which may be named the Nikon D95 and D3100 respectively, according to NikonRumors.com. I’ve noticed that the price of the D90 has gone back up to its regular price in the mid $850 and has not dropped to its low earlier in the year of $745. This tells me they were trying to liquidate their supply and the few that are left are being listed now at regular price. With Nikon, this normally happens a few months before they are about to release a new camera model.

But who knows, we may have to wait longer. For those waiting for a Nikon D700s to be announced or released, you may need to hold on a little longer. In the meantime, look at this pretty woman to calm your excitement! ;-)

The winner is Dan!

And the winner is…Dan! I loved how he adapted her pose to the settings. With her elbow crushing the top of the building to the helicopter in her hair, it all works wells with her facial expression. All the other submissions were very good, but I think Dan’s version was very imaginative. After seeing his other samples on flickr, I can see he’s a master in creating “giants”!

Dan, I can see now how her evil sexy look inspired you to create this image, well done!

Dan, look in your in-box for your special set of pictures.

For a future photo contest, I have a special prize lined up. So be sure to check back soon. I’m sure our flickr viewers will especially like this one!

How good are your photo editing skills?

Unedited version

Unedited version - Download

Often readers of this blog or my flickr account edit my pictures for fun. I love seeing the different versions people create with them. Many times they look better than the way I would have edited them! :-) Today I received another one and it gave me the idea of a nice game/contest.

So here it is, the picture on the left is un-edited, and for the most part straight out of the camera. Its a large file, a picture I took last year. Click on the image to see the larger version and download it. Work on it as you see fit to make it look better. Crop it, change colors, sharpen, blur, anything you like. Use any photo editing software to make it look the way you want it. Then send it to me and I will post them here at outletphotography.com. I’ll then ask the readers to choose the “winner”. The winner will get a “special” set of pictures from one of my past shoots.

As you can see, my little contest is not exactly a contest, only a way for everyone to learn photo editing skills from seeing each others work. Also, if you are a “friend” of mine via Flickr and submit a picture, I’ll be sure to send you a special “picture”! ;-)   Oh yeah, one more thing, this is only open to those that subscribe to this blog. So if you have not done so, do that first (its free) then send me your picture!

The deadline to submit your picture is Tuesday, May 25th. Have fun!

Send your finished picture to me here: outletphoto@gmail.com By sending your submission you agree to allow outletphotography.com to post it on this website, only your first name will be shared with the image. Sorry, no compensation will be given for allowing the image to be posted on outletphotography.com.

Which digital camera is the best deal and right for me?

I’m in search of a new Nikon camera (body only). My main Nikon camera began to give me problems this weekend. During and before my TFP shoot, the LCD monitor on the back of the body stopped working. I cant view the menu, nor change any of the advanced settings. Seems the LCD monitor only shows the menu and latest picture taken for a split second then freezes. Unable to change the advanced camera settings as well as formatting the memory card was a surprise was frustrating and ruined my shoot.

After ending the shoot early and trying to fix the problem at home, I finally gave up and decided to have Nikon Inc repair it for me. I’m sure once its fixed, the camera will work great, but digital cameras have advanced tremendously in the last several years that I’m due for a newer version. I checked the actuation’s on my Nikon and with about 41,000 actuation’s, I feel after it gets repaired I will be able to use it as a backup camera for a few more years. An “actuation” for those who don’t know, is each time the shutter is opens and closes, essentially the number of pictures the camera has taken in its life. This number can be reset by various ways, but I’m the original owner and know that it has not been reset.

So now comes the fun part! Researching the latest cameras and finding the right one that meets my criteria. Over the years I have have invested in Nikon lenses, some consumer lenses and a couple of pro lenses, so it makes sense for me to purchase another Nikon camera. All my lenses are newer (purchased in the last 10 yrs) so I know they will work on most if not all new Nikon digital cameras. Actually I know they will all fit a Nikon since they use the popular F mount, but in my case I know the lenses will be able to use all the popular features of the new cameras.

Like the rest of you, I too have a budget and I don’t buy simply because its the newest and latest model. I purchase cameras that make sense for me. In the past, I’ve purchased new and used cameras, there is nothing wrong with buying used, especially if you know how to get a good deal. Or buying a later model that is no longer produced, Nikon does this all the time. For example back in 2005 they introduced the Nikon D70s, while most camera shops where still selling the Nikon D70. For several hundred dollars less you could purchase a D70, new and a perfect camera for its time. The same thing happens every year, last April-May it was the Nikon D200, Best Buy had it new for $600, a camera that the year before was selling for $1500.

When it comes to digital camera’s, it pays to do research and not purchase the first model you see on sale. I’ll keep you posted on which I get. Will it be the Nikon D90, D700, or other? Full frame or 3/4ths? Which one do you use? Comment on this post and let me know which camera you prefer, regardless of brand, I want to know!

My rechargeable batteries almost ruined my photo shoot!

When I photographed this classy lady earlier in the year, I had a major problem with my camera equipment. I met her at a local park and we shot for a very short while. I didn’t take any portable lights or even a reflector. All I carried with me was a Nikon DSLR body, two lenses, a Nikon SB26 and a Canon G10 as a backup/testing. The day before I decided I needed a new set of rechargeable batteries for my SB flash, so I picked up a set at the local store. I figured they were all the same, so I picked up the least expensive set, since rechargeable batteries are pricey, the set I was replacing were not the best ones but had lasted a couple of years, so I was not concerned about the quality/reliability of batteries at all! Oh, how I regret this decision!

The next day at the photo shoot, instantly as I began to shoot away at this beautiful woman and checked my preview screen and data for a few photos, I realized the photos were either way to over exposed or under exposed. First I thought perhaps the flash was not attached to the hot shoe correctly. After checking it, blowing some air in the contacts, I thought it would work fine. Again, I was wrong, the flash looked as if it was working fine, but it it seemed it would fire at full power no matter what my camera was doing. The LCD screen started to act funny, then after 20-30 minutes of this, I stopped using the SB flash. I had to shoot with available light and my Canon G10.

“Of all days, why this day!” I said to myself, here I was in a nice park with a very beautiful woman modeling some great outfits and my flash was whacked! At the time I didn’t know what exactly was the problem.

After the shoot I stopped by the store and purchase a new set, not the cheapest one, but middle of the road one and sure enough after I charged them, I did a few test shots and my flash/camera combination were working correctly. The metering settings were in sync and the light in the photos were balanced. I learned my lesson, but it cost me. Although I was able to capture some great images, I was handicapped because of the choice of batteries I purchased!

I added a link to amazon to the batteries I ended up getting…the ones that worked! If you ever need rechargeable batteries, I recommend these, they worked for me. Get them at Amazon or your local store. I use the 1 hour charger with the car adapter, this way I can have two sets and if needed charging one set while using the other. These are the batteries: Energizer NH15BP-4 Rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride AA Battery 4 Pack
