 Super Bowl Sunday
A short update today since its Superbowl Sunday. I know, I know, the girl on the left is wearing the wrong team outfit, but she looks so good I wanted to share. Today I’ll be eating, drinking and having fun, hope everyone else does too!
Also, since I’ve been in the market for a new digital camera, I wanted share a good deal I found on the Nikon D90 camera. Amazon.com is selling the Nikon D90 for $779 ! This is one of the lowest prices I’ve seen for this camera, a couple of years back it was selling for over $1400! In order to see and get the lower price for the Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) you will need to add it to the cart. This is one of the camera’s I’m considering, so far its the lowest price I could find from a legitimate seller and in new condition.

"Its going to cost WHAT to fix my camera"?
Earlier this week I dropped off my camera at the Nikon repair shop. Its an older digital camera but I was hoping the problem would be an easy and inexpensive repair, preferably under $100. With the quickly dropping prices of used or older digital cameras by 40-60% in only a couple of years after their release, paying for a major repair would not be a good financial move.
Nikon finally got back to me with an estimate for the repair. In fact, I didn’t notice, but they had sent me the repair estimate via email less than 20 minutes after I left their office! The email went unnoticed by me until earlier today. The total cost of the repair would be $303! I couldn’t believe it would cost so much. For a couple of hundred more I can get a much more advanced (used) Nikon. And for the same amount, I can buy the exact camera replacement used, with a lens!
Sure 4-5 years ago I paid $1300 for the camera, but in digital camera years, 4-5 yrs is ancient history. So now I won’t be able to use it even as a backup. Seems I’ll need to return and pickup the camera only to sell it on ebay for parts, to get $25-$40 at best for it.
I do wonder if Nikon actually takes the time to inspect digital cameras if they are an older model. Perhaps they simply check to see what is not working without opening and quote a fixed amount to fix. After all, I received the repair estimate while I was still driving back from dropping it off at their office!

I’m in search of a new Nikon camera (body only). My main Nikon camera began to give me problems this weekend. During and before my TFP shoot, the LCD monitor on the back of the body stopped working. I cant view the menu, nor change any of the advanced settings. Seems the LCD monitor only shows the menu and latest picture taken for a split second then freezes. Unable to change the advanced camera settings as well as formatting the memory card was a surprise was frustrating and ruined my shoot.
After ending the shoot early and trying to fix the problem at home, I finally gave up and decided to have Nikon Inc repair it for me. I’m sure once its fixed, the camera will work great, but digital cameras have advanced tremendously in the last several years that I’m due for a newer version. I checked the actuation’s on my Nikon and with about 41,000 actuation’s, I feel after it gets repaired I will be able to use it as a backup camera for a few more years. An “actuation” for those who don’t know, is each time the shutter is opens and closes, essentially the number of pictures the camera has taken in its life. This number can be reset by various ways, but I’m the original owner and know that it has not been reset.
So now comes the fun part! Researching the latest cameras and finding the right one that meets my criteria. Over the years I have have invested in Nikon lenses, some consumer lenses and a couple of pro lenses, so it makes sense for me to purchase another Nikon camera. All my lenses are newer (purchased in the last 10 yrs) so I know they will work on most if not all new Nikon digital cameras. Actually I know they will all fit a Nikon since they use the popular F mount, but in my case I know the lenses will be able to use all the popular features of the new cameras.

Like the rest of you, I too have a budget and I don’t buy simply because its the newest and latest model. I purchase cameras that make sense for me. In the past, I’ve purchased new and used cameras, there is nothing wrong with buying used, especially if you know how to get a good deal. Or buying a later model that is no longer produced, Nikon does this all the time. For example back in 2005 they introduced the Nikon D70s, while most camera shops where still selling the Nikon D70. For several hundred dollars less you could purchase a D70, new and a perfect camera for its time. The same thing happens every year, last April-May it was the Nikon D200, Best Buy had it new for $600, a camera that the year before was selling for $1500.
When it comes to digital camera’s, it pays to do research and not purchase the first model you see on sale. I’ll keep you posted on which I get. Will it be the Nikon D90, D700, or other? Full frame or 3/4ths? Which one do you use? Comment on this post and let me know which camera you prefer, regardless of brand, I want to know!

 Canon Powershot G11
Recently Canon came out with the new Canon Powershot G11, about a year after they came out with the Canon Powershot G10, why you ask? Beats me. But there are two major differences from the G10 and G11, one being the smaller LCD display that now flips out. Seems convenient, but the screen drops in size from a 3 inch to a 2.8 inch, it also adds a little more bulk to the camera. The other noticeable change is the drop in megapixels, from 14 in the G10 to 10 for the G11. Makes sense, as most of you have read all my posts about my feeling towards the megapixel wars and how unimportant it really becomes after a certain point.
I currently own a G10 and recently handled a G11 a friend purchased, there are more differences, but they are small, the two main ones are those above. So what does all this mean for someone looking to get a high end compact camera? Well, that all depends on you. Want the latest greatest gadget, then get the Canon G11 and shoot away. Want to spend a little less and get the bargain of the year? Find one of the many sales out there during the xmas season selling their new Canon G10′s and take the same photos you would have on a G11! Or better yet, a used G10 for a couple of hundred dollars.
Picture of the new Canon Powershot G11 below, followed by a photo of Crystal who doesn’t care what type of camera you use as long as you know how to use it!
