Kymberly Jane is a popular local model and from some of the comments in the past, I can tell she is well received here on my blog. When I photographed Kymberly earlier this year, I used two digital cameras, a Nikon DSLR and a Canon G10. The few samples I have shared have been from both. Earlier this month I received an email via flickr about the ability to use the Canon G10 with studio lights and if it were possible.

The answer is yes. The images of Kymberly below are ones I took exclusively with the Canon Powershot G10. I overexposed them a little, but you really do have full control of the camera, as you would a regular DSLR. The G10 allows you to have full manual control and can be easily used with a Pocket Wizard to trigger your studio lights. In fact, I found I could trigger the lights without the Pocket Wizard attached, the camera has a wireless function that can detect a nearby receiver and trigger it. But I didn’t use that feature much, so I cant give much details about it. You can check your manual or test it without the Pocket Wizard.

I recently checked the current prices for a Canon Powershot G10 and was happy to see that the price dropped! Because of the fast pace advancement of digital camera updates, this is a great time to get digital cameras at a low price. Just a few months ago, the Canon Powershot G10 was going for $450 at Samys.com now on they have it listed for $399!

Below are a couple photos of Kymberly Jane taken with a Canon Powershot G10.

Reliable model retires, best of luck!

Shooting a model at the bridge

Shooting a model at the bridge

I received some sad news today, seems a model I photographed earlier in the year has retired from modeling. I did a test shoot outdoors with her then later a studio shoot. She was a joy to work with! Seems she will be focusing on college and other goals in life. I wish her best of luck.

You can see more of her from my last post in March HERE.

If you ever have the privilege of photographing models/woman, you will find a wide range of talent. From those who are difficult to work with to those that simply make your day. This model was a pleasure to photograph. New, but very professional. She was always up for all types of ideas. In this photo, she tore up her jeans…in some very risky places! But when a model goes that extra step to make the image pop, then you know you found a good one!

Image was taken outdoors, on a bridge over a dry creek. I was on the floor shooting up with with a somewhat wide angle, don’t recall what mm it was. Nikon DSLR and Nikon SB strobe.

Take better pictures with the new Canon Powershot G11?

Canon Powershot G11 is it better

Canon Powershot G11

Recently Canon came out with the new Canon Powershot G11, about a year after they came out with the Canon Powershot G10, why you ask? Beats me. But there are two major differences from the G10 and G11, one being the smaller LCD display that now flips out. Seems convenient, but the screen drops in size from a 3 inch to a 2.8 inch, it also adds a little more bulk to the camera. The other noticeable change is the drop in megapixels, from 14 in the G10 to 10 for the G11. Makes sense, as most of you have read all my posts about my feeling towards the megapixel wars and how unimportant it really becomes after a certain point.

I currently own a G10 and recently handled a G11 a friend purchased, there are more differences, but they are small, the two main ones are those above. So what does all this mean for someone looking to get a high end compact camera? Well, that all depends on you. Want the latest greatest gadget, then get the Canon G11 and shoot away. Want to spend a little less and get the bargain of the year? Find one of the many sales out there during the xmas season selling their new Canon G10′s and take the same photos you would have on a G11! Or better yet, a used G10 for a couple of hundred dollars.

CH 53E Super Stallion at the Miramar Air Show photographed with my Canon PowerShot G10

Spent the weekend at the SD Miramar Air Show. Thought I would share something from the day. Armed with my Nikon DSLR and my 80-200mm 2.8AFD, I also took my handy Canon PowerShot G10. I took the below photo with my Canon G10, lots of people as you can see, but I wanted to capture the CH 53E Super Stallion from an angle where I could use the helicopter blade to block out the sun. This is what I came up with. An added bonus was the ad in the sky. Funny I guess.

Working with a real first time model...its an adventure!

Photographers are always stating how they have “amateur” models, but then when you look at the photos, the models are usually internet models or semi-professionals. For the most part, with the exception of a few here and there, I enjoy working with everyday woman. Maybe its the excitement they bring to a shoot or the sexy nervousness when she first starts to pose for me, whichever it is, it works for me!

A woman new to modeling transforms within a few hours during a shoot. A good example is the woman below. First, I noticed she liked to play with the water, so I photographed her playing and having fun. Later, I was complimenting her about her figure and I sensed she was enjoying the attention. She began to loosen up, hence the second photo when she opened up her wrap to reveal her body. She said she felt “sexy” and “free” at the beach. Maybe the open wrap pose was her way of teasing me or the camera, whichever it was, I liked it! The last photo was later in the day after she tried a few more sexy outfits. I figured she was ready to be more daring. I asked if she wanted to pose in this tight red dress and she said yes right away. As you can see, its meant to be worn without underwear. She was completely fine wearing it, even though it was the most revealing outfit she ever wore, at least that’s what she told me!

If you are a photographer working with a new model, be prepared. She is relying on you to guide her. So take your time but be sure to lead her to the poses and outfits that accentuate her beauty. When she sees the great photos you took of her, she will want to work with you again! And believe me, she doesn’t care if you are using a Canon, Nikon, Olympus, or have the latest and fastest lens. She wants to feel comfortable and beautiful as you photograph her, so make sure she feels that way and capture it!
