 Huntington Beach sun bathers
This past weekend, while this site was down due to problems with my hosting problem, I decided to get out and unwind at the beach. The skies were clear and temperatures were around 85F/29C. The beach was crowded with people, there was a professional volleyball tournament on one side of the pier and a body boarding contest further down the beach.
It was a perfect day for people watching or simply taking in the sites. It was a photographers dream, and there were many around, shooting the contestants of the contests and spectators. I noticed all types of photo equipment being used, but it seemed that a long zoom lens was pretty standard with the photographers. I can understand with all the bikini girls walking or laying around why someone would want a zoom lens, but to capture the overall feel of the beach you really need a wide angle lens.
The image shown above, illustrates how a wide angle view of the beach is more dramatic. I was able to show the beach, the sunbathers and the inland homes lined with palm trees. All of it seems to reach out in an upside down “V” into the horizon. Click on the image to see it in its full size. You’ll see the variety of people and actions occurring, from the swimmers to the sunbathers. I love taking pictures like this, it tells so many stories.
Close-ups at the beach are fine, like this one, I guess they are ok too, but next time try a wide angle shot, you wont regret it!

Its that time of the year again...bikini season!
Its that time of the year again…bikini season! Ok, ok, maybe its not an official season, but for many photographers who photograph models, this time of the year allows us to shoot models outdoors instead of a studio. The beach of course is the more popular location, but it doesn’t need to be.
If you don’t have a beach nearby, find a unique location with little minimal people traffic. You don’t need too many gawkers interrupting your shoot. For new models, the least amount of lookers will also help her relax. Take everything into consideration, but mostly her needs.
One thing that photographers always forget during a location shoot is where the model will change clothes. A car will do as long as its private, meaning the windows are covered. But I like using a portable changing room. Its cheap, roomy and the models feel like you thought about their needs and comfort.

 Bikini Model
I must admit, I’m not the best at using props for my photo shoots. Although I try to prepare prior to one, when it comes to choosing the right props I’m not the best. Especially when photographing a bikini model, other than a pair of high heels, does she really need anything else? I must have thought so because I used a regular wooden stool, purchased at a local Walmart, and photographed her as she leaned up against it!
Sounded a little silly at first, but it did allow her to make up poses on and around the stool. I noticed that she felt a little more comfortable posing with it then without. I guess it gave her more possibilities when it came to poses. Which is why I brought this subject up today, although I’m not the best person to pick out props for shoots, one thing I have learned is that no matter how silly or strange a prop seems to be, the model appreciates having “something” to model with or along side to.
This is especially true for those girls who are new to modeling. They usually need guidance and patience. Having a prop, whether its a chair, box, desk, anything really, the object seems to give the model some comfort and works as a “safety blanket” of sorts. I try to have several props always available to use during a photo shoot. I don’t always use them, but its nice to have in the event I or the model run out of posing ideas.
Props also don’t need to be expensive, I often visit my local discount store or visit stores holding closeout and going out of business sales to get great bargains on props. Try using a prop at your next photo shoot, even if you’re only photographing a friend or family member! A happy model will lead to better pictures!

Large green leaves and a bikini model
Whenever I’m going to use a location for a shoot, I always look for unique settings or backgrounds that I can use during the shoot. I don’t overlook anything. One thing I look for are trees, flowers, bushes, or anything with natural colors and textures. The picture on the left is a good example. The leaves were so large with great color and texture that I used it as a background.
Don’t overlook areas like this, they can help you generate new ideas for poses as you work to include the background in your pictures. In the picture to the left, I really enjoyed the large green leaves, the texture and natural colors. Wanting to include them in my pictures, I asked the model, who was posing in a bikini with high heels to get down low…yeah, I know, difficult to do in heels! But she started with a simple squat with one foot slightly forward.
It was a bright but overcast day, so the light was even, a perfect setting to use existing light. I like the way the light bounces off the leaves and the model! The extended little pinky finger was an extra plus by the model. Overall I was able to get so many great images using this background.
Model positioning herself for the next pose.
However, it does take some trial and error to find the correct angles. With the plant leaves so low, the model and I had to also get low. I tried photographing her from different angles testing out the verious perspectives as well as the model trying poses that kept her lower to the ground yet still showing off her figure. Trust me that is difficult to do!
She tried several poses laying on her side, but I wasn’t to inspired by them. There was only a portion of the plant where the leaves grew very large enabling it to fill the background, so she was limited in the number of possible poses. The photo on the right shows her positioning herself for a different pose and as you can see it requires talent!

 Unique Bikini Pose
Only a short update today, more of a reader request than anything else. Actually I ended up getting several emails requesting more photos of this model. After looking over several of the pictures from my set with Amy I really think she looks very beautiful in this pose. Her expression and smile really shows off her beauty!
As for the pose, well it sure is different! Not exactly the kind most bikini models do but seems to work for me! It was a cold afternoon, so Amy was a real sport about wearing the bikini. I photographed her quickly so she would not be exposed to the cold for too long but she didn’t seem to mind much. I used a Nikon D70 digital camera with existing light and two different lenses, sorry I don’t recall which ones.
But considering that the bikini was not hers and was a little too big for her, the picture and the rest of the shoot went very well.
