 Jump from the pier
Thought I would share something a little different today. While taking a walk at the beach and pier yesterday, I noticed that the local Jr. Lifeguards in training where preparing to jump of the end of the pier. Of course I headed towards the crowd gathering to view the event.
Its a long way down, so for many I’m sure it wasn’t an easy jump. They had people down below ready for any emergencies. You could see the fear on some of the participants. However in the end, all jump successfully and without any problems.

 Beach
These past several days in Southern California have been extremely hot, over 100 degrees in most places. I’ve been spending most of my time at the beach or in a movie theater. Last night we decided to see the new Leonardo Dicaprio movie Inception, which by the way I recommend, but you must pay attention very carefully because it can be a little confusing.
Anyways, haven’t been doing much photography this month, mostly spending time with family and friends. Although a few days ago I decided to go on a bike ride at the beach and took along my little handy Canon G10. Whenever I take a break from a ride or see something interesting I snap a few pictures. Like this one or this one!

 Huntington Beach sun bathers
This past weekend, while this site was down due to problems with my hosting problem, I decided to get out and unwind at the beach. The skies were clear and temperatures were around 85F/29C. The beach was crowded with people, there was a professional volleyball tournament on one side of the pier and a body boarding contest further down the beach.
It was a perfect day for people watching or simply taking in the sites. It was a photographers dream, and there were many around, shooting the contestants of the contests and spectators. I noticed all types of photo equipment being used, but it seemed that a long zoom lens was pretty standard with the photographers. I can understand with all the bikini girls walking or laying around why someone would want a zoom lens, but to capture the overall feel of the beach you really need a wide angle lens.
The image shown above, illustrates how a wide angle view of the beach is more dramatic. I was able to show the beach, the sunbathers and the inland homes lined with palm trees. All of it seems to reach out in an upside down “V” into the horizon. Click on the image to see it in its full size. You’ll see the variety of people and actions occurring, from the swimmers to the sunbathers. I love taking pictures like this, it tells so many stories.
Close-ups at the beach are fine, like this one, I guess they are ok too, but next time try a wide angle shot, you wont regret it!

Turned out to be a cloudy day at the beach.
Whenever I travel, whether its a week long or weekend trip, I always carry along a camera. Taking pictures is a passion of mine. But during a vacation I try not to over analyze things. I follow one simple rule: taking pictures of things/events/people that catch my attention. These pictures are usually the most interesting.
The photo on the left was taken during one of my last trips. It was a cloudy day at the beach, with a few showers. The only good thing was the warm weather. The beach was crowded with people despite the rain. This girl was slowly making her way out to the water as a very dark cloud covered up the sunlight.
There was something about her out in the dark beach and the calm waters that caught my attention. I quickly snapped a few pictures with my Canon G10. It wasn’t the best photo I’ve taken, but considering the dark skies and rain, I think it turned out to be an ok snapshot.
If you like photography and want to learn more, take my advice, before you pay for an expensive camera, use whatever camera you have and spend some time taking pictures with what you have. Taking good pictures is not always about having an expensive camera, but the passion of the person taking the pictures!

Sunset view from the Griffith Observatory
This weekend I headed over to the LA Griffith Observatory, the first clear day after a week long of rain in the area. The skies were clear and visibility seemed to be great. I think half the photographers in LA were also thinking the same thing, I must have counted at least 50+ people carrying tripods and photo equipment trying to capture the sunset and night lights of LA. But we were all a little sad to see a light haze come in as the sun started to set. The temperature dropped and the haze become worse.
We continued with our quest to catch the sunset and the LA city lights, but the setting sun didn’t give the show we were all expecting. I took the picture on the left as it set over West LA/Santa Monica. Once it became dark, the city lights were nice but due to the haze/light fog, it wasn’t the ideal night to take pictures.
 Picture of beach at sunset
Honestly I miss the warmer days. Even though we never get that cold or have temperatures lower than the upper 40′s in the coldest of nights, the days are often very nice with 65+ degrees in the winter months and 70+ degrees the rest of the year. I prefer to shoot sunsets with people in them!
Sunsets are nice, but wouldn’t they look better if we had a couple of nice ladies modeling and use the sunset as a backdrop? The bright orange glow and glistning waves can provide the perfect backdrop to any photo. I know everyone doesn’t live near a beach or access to one, but sunsets are something everyone has access to. So next time, forget about a studio shoot, go out and scout the best area where you live and shoot a sunset with a friend or two and spice up your pictures!
